About

IYRS Maritime Library

The Edward W. Kane and James Gubelmann IYRS Maritime Library is open to the public and is the only library of its kind in the state of Rhode Island. The library’s collection includes books, plans, photographs, films, and artifacts related to the maritime heritage of Rhode Island, with a focus on Newport, Aquidneck Island, and Narragansett Bay. These are held in a circulating collection of books as well as in an archive of rare books, printed matter, photographs, film, and other A/V and digital resources. The library is the home of the Tom Morris Library Collection from the National Sailing Hall of Fame.

Visitors and patrons can view many of the artifacts, which include ship models, sail and lines plans, photographs, films, and historic yachting trophies, on display in the library.

The handsome reading room that houses the IYRS Maritime Library collection is located on the fourth floor of the John Mecray Aquidneck Mill Building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The library overlooks the IYRS campus and the Newport waterfront.

“Navigating the Stacks” was envisioned by IYRS Maritime Library co-founder and contributor James Gubelmann in order to illuminate the depth and richness of the Special Collections contained within. Gubelmann said, “Together with IYRS Librarian, Helen Sowinski (2020-22), and now Francis Frost, along with former Creative Director of the Museum of Yachting, SallyAnne Santos, we will provide insight into the Library’s holdings, specifically highlighting contents of the Special Collections.”

Circulating items may be borrowed by IYRS students, faculty and staff. The public is welcome to visit, read, and research during open hours or by appointment.

International Congress of Maritime Museums
